Hat: Straw Boater
Dear friends, hats have been taking over the fashion scene this season. Whether it’s a jaunty straw boater, chic French beret or sophisticated fedora, this timeless accessory offers a multitude of styling options. Hats can elevate an otherwise simple and neutral look and can punctuate a monochromatic look with a swath of color or texture. Conversely, a streamlined toque or sculptural topper can add elegance to a ruffled confection of a dress or can tone down a technicolor outfit. Fashion, aside, hats provide protection in the sweltering heat of summer and add a layer of warmth in the frigid depths of winter.
Did you know that hats were worn as early as 3200 B.C in ancient Egypt? They served a pragmatic purpose in those days; since the fashion at the time was to have shaved heads, conical shaped headdresses were worn to protect the delicate skin of the scalp from the sun’s scorching rays. Five thousand years later, we are still wearing sun hats, bonnets and visors for the very same purpose! For those of us who prefer not to rock shorn locks, hats often save the day as they cover up a whole multitude of hair sins!
