It is said that the sari is “6 yards of grace.” I couldn’t agree more. I’m so fortunate to hail from the home of the sari: India. Although, I was born in England and came to the United States at the age of fifteen, and never really wore a sari regularly until my adult years, I have always had a fascination with the simple, yet complex garment. I would always marvel at the expert and graceful way that my mother and grandmother would carry the delicate swath of fabric.

I attend quite a few Indian weddings, parties and other events throughout the year and find that I need to have a slew of outfits on hand for these festive occasions. Of course, one can never be seen at the same event twice in the same outfit, so cost can become quite an issue when planning a wardrobe of Indian attire. Saris are often pieces of artwork in and of themselves. Highly trained embroidery artists spend countless hours painstakingly stitching ornate designs and applying delicate beadwork to the softest silk to render the most ethereal pieces of clothing you could imagine. Some of these garments can, deservedly, fetch a handsome price. However, in the name of budget-conscious fashion, I have found some lovely pieces at a much lower price; the sari that I am wearing here is $60, but looks much more expensive! While an heirloom silk piece may well last several generations, these bargain items can still stand the test of time. I have purchased saris and have pulled them out years later to recycle them and no one is any the wiser!
